Look back at 2014

I recently saw this end of year questionnaire on Tanya’s blog – dearmax.org. Tanya got the idea from Nafisa. So I asked Nafisa if I could use it and she said of course! 2014 has hands down been the hardest year of my life, for reasons I haven’t really spoken much about on this blog. But I’ve decided to do a wrap up of 2014, mainly, for me!

1. What did you do in 2014 that you’d never done before?
I ran my first 10km race, and in a good time too (1h4m), without dying! Was so proud of myself! I was filmed for an FNB TV advert! Erin started swimming lessons, which she never did before. Damien started mountain cycling and completed the TRANS BAVIAANS!!!

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I never really make those, as I don’t stick to them….

3. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve?
Not quite sure, will be at my in-laws house in Port Shepstone, nothing planned as yet. Not big into new year’s eve to be honest.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Very thankfully and gratefully not.

5. What countries did you visit?
Portuguese Island on our terrible trip with MSC, read about it here.

6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?
More patience with Erin and the fact that she is after all just a child.

7. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

11 April 2014 – Day I miscarried twins and had a D&C to remove them.

17 April 2014 – Day I rushed myself to the Morningside ER, as was bleeding so much. Had another D & C, as the first one was not successful.

24 May 2014 – Emergency operation to have my appendix removed

29 May 2014 – Finally discharged from the hospital, after losing 6kgs in 7 days, wondering how I would get through this…….

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
The fact that we dropped Erin off on the first day of school and she didn’t cry. She didn’t cry the second, or third or fourth, or ever day. It showed me that we have taught her independence and that she knows she’ll be okay and that she’ll be home, with us, again in the evening. She has made me prouder this year than I could have ever imagined, her growth has been prenominal!!!

9. What was your biggest failure?
The fact that I let acquaintances into my life too quickly, I trust people way too quickly. But not anymore, that won’t be happening in 2015, I have an intense guard up now.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

So so much! This was my worst health year BY FAR! My acid reflux luckily was under control due to Nexium. But undergoing THREE operations in SIX weeks was not fun. In November 2015 I found out I have a “sluggish” thyroid and now on chronic thyroid meds, forever. REALLY pray 2015 will be a better health year for me.
11. What was the best thing you bought?

Our iPad. Damien uses it for work, Erin plays with it (helps us get ready in thee mornings). I use it for games and lists 🙂 Multifunctional tool! The other best thing we “bought” was our week long trip to Cape Town at the end of April 2014, was just fabulous!

12. Where did most of your money go?
Rent, food, Erin, school, domestic help 🙂

13. What song will always remind you of 2014?
Because we can – Bon Jovi

“I don’t wanna be another wave in the ocean
I am a rock, not just another grain of sand (that’s right)
I wanna be the one you run to when you need a shoulder
I ain’t a soldier but I’m here to take a stand because we can”

14. What do you wish you’d done more of?
RUN – wish I had discovered the joy of running sooner this year and wish I had run more kilometers!! I wish I had taken more risks………

15. What do you wish you’d done less of?

16. What was your favourite TV program?
I have quite a few – Greys (as always), Suits, Blacklist and Fixer

17. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I wouldn’t say hate, but very strongly dislike and will certainly not call that person my “friend” any longer.

18. What was the best book you read?
Eek – I don’t read. But started reading “The strong willed child, by Dobson” and really liked it!

19. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Music from Begin again – with Adam Levine in it

20. What was your favourite film of this year?
Begin again

21. What did you do on your birthday?

My close friends and I went to Pappachinos, along with all our children, was lovely!

22. What kept you sane?
Erin and Damien! My two peeps!!! Dancing every evening with Erin like nobody’s watching! Erin has taught me so much and Damien has accepted me – Just the way I am (our wedding song). My mum’s morning phone calls to tell me that everything would be okay. My life group and all the people in it. The Grace Factory!!!

23. Who did you miss?
Rolanda and Chrissie, never saw them nearly as much as I wanted to see them. They both live so far away, but I miss our hours and hours of conversations we used to have.

24. Who was the best new person you met?
Definitely Handri and Katya, my two Riverclub, Adams family, cray cray gals! Just LOVE them to bits!!!! I’m also thrilled to have met Thando, her help is immeasurable!

25. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014:
That things don’t always happen when you expect them to. That God’s timing is perfect (not sure if I’ve learnt this yet, but think I’m being taught this).  That I need more patience. That people aren’t always what/ who they say they are. Actions speak MUCH louder than words! That giving is WAY better than receiving. That children are the biggest blessing this world can give us. That children can teach adults so many things, we just need to listen. That Damien is my rock and I know appreciate our marriage more than ever before!

Foo fighters – great night out

Damien and I don’t often go out at night, as we have a very short and small list of babysitters. When we heard Foo fighters were coming to SA we decided to buy tickets for our anniversary (to spoil ourselves!!)

We normally go to concerts with our dear friends – Pete, Emma, Chris and Stacey and asked them to join us.

The evening / afternoon started with burgers and beers at Hudsons – Parkhurst. I have only ever been to the one in Cape Town, but can definitely recommend the Parkhurst one if burgers and craft beer is your thang!

The six of us got into the bakkie and arrived at the stadium around 7pm, which is REALLY the way to go! We managed to see the second half of Kaizer Chiefs, who were quite awesome and then chilled on our seats (yes we got SEATED tickets) until 9pm when Foo Fighter’s started to play.

They were absolutely amazing!! For someone who isn’t THAT into rock, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The played for THREE full hours – no break and had so much energy. I absolutely loved the drummer (Taylor Hawkins) and the fact that he looked like a surfer was so cool! Dave Grohl is of course fantastic and played the drums for one song, which was magical. They played “Under pressure – Queen” which was WOW.

The night was really loads of fun, we got home round 1am and were exhausted on Sunday, but it was so worth it!!!!

Thanks Pete, Emm, Chris and Stace!! Here’s to many more cool FNB stadium concerts!!!

Happy anniversary to my best friend

Dear Damien

Happy 4 year anniversary. I can’t believe we have been married for four years and the blessings we have received in our marriage this year! You are my best friend and I thank God daily for you. Here’s to MANY more! Love you millions!

Naartjie’s revamped online store

Naartjie have launched their revamped online store and I must be honest, it’s really awesome! It’s quick, easy to use and with quality pictures! I received a R500 voucher and ordered FOUR clothing items for Erin last week Friday. The items were delivered to our house on Wednesday.

The package was so beautiful, turquoise box and clothes folded really nicely. Even a form where you can send back items, if they don’t fit, or are not what you expected.

Check out Naartjie’s online store here to get shopping!!!
